It is characterized as a Project of Common Interest, under the code name PCI 3.24, since October 2013 and a Strategic Investment, since 2014. The technical studies were co-financed by the Connecting Europe Facility Program while part of the total cost of the project will be financed by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, following the positive evaluation of the Greek recovery and resilience plan by the European Commission.

Οn July 1st, 2022 the company under the name “TERNA ENERGY-PUMPED STORAGE I SINGLE MEMBER SOCIETE ΑΝΟΝΥΜΕ”, with the distinctive title “TERNA ENERGY-PUMPED STORAGE I S.M.S.A.” was established for the purpose of the construction and operation of the project.

On 10/24/2022, the decisions for the Installation permits of the project “460 MW Pumped Storage Station and its appurtenant works ” in Agios Georgios as well as for the “220 MW Pumped Storage Station and its appurtenant works ” in  Pyrgos, were posted in Diaygeia.

  • The Project’s objective is the energy storage and the maximization of renewable energy (RES) penetration in the energy production mix.
  • Annual energy production: ~ 816.00 GWh

An investment that exceeds € 600 million

  • Around 900 jobs are to be created during the construction phase and 60 permanent jobs during operation
